Pastrana PictureIn 1988, President Andres Pastrana was elected the first Popular Mayor of Bogotá, after surviving a kidnapping attempt ordered by the Cartel of Medellín. He served as mayor until 1990. In 1991, he founded the New Democratic Force movement and succeeded in winning a seat in the Colombian Senate where he served until 1993. In 1998, Pastrana was elected President of Colombia for a four-year term. In August 2005, Pastrana was appointed Ambassador of Colombia to the United States. He also continues to serve as the Honorary President of the Unión de Partidos Latinoamericanos (UPLA).
