Cem
Özdemir is a member of the European Parliament for the German Green Party. He
is politically anchored in his home state of Baden-Württemberg, where he joined
the Green Party in 1981. In 1994, he was elected to the German Parliament and
became its first-ever member of Turkish descent. In 2003, Mr. Özdemir was a "Transatlantic
Fellow" at the German Marshall Fund of the United
States in Washington and
in Brussels, where he studied how minority
communities organize themselves politically in the United
States as compared to Europe.
Mr. Özdemir was elected to the European Parliament in 2004, where his areas of
focus are European foreign policy, the relationship between the EU and Turkey, German and European migration and
integration policy and Islam in Germany
and Europe.
