Steve Tatham

Steve Tatham is a serving officer in the Royal Navy and has operational experience from Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan.  A specialist in Media and Information Operations he is currently appointed as Director of Communication Research at the UK Defence Academy where he has lead for the development of Strategic Communication doctrine and education across Defence.  In 2006 his polemical study 'Losing Arab Hearts & Minds: The Coalition, Al-Jazeera and Muslim Public Opinion' was published to critical acclaim. Since then his work has been published widely, most notably 'Strategic Communication : A Primer' and 'Tactical Strategic Communication!', the latter recording the planning and research that went into the behaviourist led deployment of 52 Brigade British Army to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. 

Tatham was seconded to the UK Cabinet Office in 2009 for work on the refresh of the National Security Strategy.  Tatham has recently submitted his PhD thesis: 'Strategic Communication in conflict and the concept of non-kinetic effect in military operations'.
