Gil Messing was an Autumn 2012 Atkin Fellow at ICSR.
Currently Gil is the Director of External Communications and Government Relations at the Strauss Group. Before this Gil was the personal advisor and spokesperson for the Israeli Leader of the Opposition and former Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni, between 2007 – 2012. In this position, Gil took an active part in all major political, security and international events that took place in Israel, including peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority, as well as bilateral talks between Israel and Arab countries, Europe and the United States. Gil has been involved in Israeli politics from an early age and prior to his former position, was a member of the founding team of Israel’s centrist party “Kadima” (2006) and was the party’s spokesperson during two national election campaigns – in which it won a majority of votes.
Gil is a Captain (Ret.) in the Israeli Defense forces where he served as Press Officer. In his last position (2004-2006) he served as the Spokesperson for the Israeli Security Forces in the Gaza Strip during the historic time of intense fighting and the Israeli pullout (The Disengagement Plan). He holds a Bachelors Degree in Government, Diplomacy and Strategy from The Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya, specialising in the Middle East and Counter Terrorism.
His research at ICSR focused on the practical ways to maintain a sustainable non-violent relationship between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority in the absence of direct negotiations. To read his paper please click here.
