The Muslim Brotherhood in the West

On 9 December Lorenzo Vidino, a Senior Research Fellow in Security Studies at the Fletcher School, Tufts University, hosted a talk at ICSR focusing on the Muslim Brotherhood. Vidino’s presentation covered the history, modus operandi, evolution and aims of the Brotherhood, examining differences among leaders from different generations and Muslim Brotherhood legacy groups. He also looked at the ways that various Western governments assess and interact with these groups, discussing the difficulty in finding a balance between working with them while countering the radicalism found in certain organizations. He stressed a need not to categorize all Muslim Brotherhood groups as homogenous, emphasising that Muslim Brotherhood groups have always adapted to the political, legal, and social frameworks of the countries in which they form to pursue their goals.
