ICSR invites you to attend a webinar with Dr Neil Ketchley and Dr Aaron Zelin, who recently co-authored an article for Political Analysis. In this piece, they overcame methodological challenges to answer the question: “Who joins extremist movements?”
The authors propose a Bayesian hierarchical case–control design, which allows them to identify individual-level and contextual factors patterning the incidence of recruitment to extremism while accounting for spatial autocorrelation, rare events, and contamination. Sampling Islamic State (IS) fighters from nine MENA countries, they found that high-status individuals in their early twenties with a college education were more likely to join the group and that there is more mixed evidence for relative deprivation.
