In an exclusive briefing to the ICSR on 2 February, former president of Colombia Andres Pastrana reported on Latin American security issues to a select group of government officials and friends of the organisation. The President has served as the first popularly elected Mayor of Bogota (after surviving a kidnapping attempt by the Medellin drug cartel), served as President of Colombia from 1998-2002, and was appointed as Ambassador of Colombia to the United States in August 2005. Pastrana updated the group on the current security situation in Colombia, particularly concerning the Government’s relations with the FARC rebel group which has fought a low-intensity civil war in the region for decades.
