In his seminar at ICSR Dr Cerwyn Moore spoke about the third wave of attacks that the insurgency from the North Caucasus has inflicted upon Russia. After outlining the history of the conflict in the region, Dr Moore went on to analyse the latest wave, which resulted in the Moscow metro bombings at the end of March.
Dr Moore was able to draw on his field work in North Caucasus to provide an insight into the motivations for the recent attacks – as well as other more spectacular attacks such as the Beslan school siege and the Nord-Ost theatre siege. Dr Moore also discussed different figures in the insurgency and the tactical use of suicide terrorism.
